Louis (Lou) Anthony Conter   13 Sep 1921 – 01 Apr 2024

Lou Conter, the sole survivor serving aboard the USS Arizona (BB-39), during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor has died at the age of 102. Conter was serving as quartermaster on Dec. 7, 1941 at 8:09AM when the hull of the USS Arizona was struck by a 1,760 lb. Japanese armor piercing bomb with enemy planes causing damage from overhead. During the large explosions that ensued, Conter remained composed and spent the next 35 minutes attempting to secure the quarterdeck and saving upwards of 20 sailors. Conter was but one of the 335 aboard ship that day to survive out of 1,177 crew. In the five days that followed, Conter joined many rescue operations. 900 sailors still lie entombed in the USS Arizona. We salute Lou Conter for his bravery and pray he now rests in peace. RWP
